LAFD's Hazardous Materials program is now the benchmark for dealing with the many difficult challenges faced by emergency response teams across the United States. COMMUNICATIONS CHALLENGE FACED The Haz-Mat squad has always realized the need to have a reliable and efficient communication system in place in the event that an emergency occurs. In present day, this would mean a system which includes SCADA, broadband Internet access, and voice/data transference. As all incidences are unique and wide-ranging in scope, the system needs to be dependable and adaptable in any environment. The system also needs to be user-friendly to allow efficient communication between frontline respondents, vehicle units, and the central hub. INFOSAT'S SOLUTION This is the first HAZ-MAT Squad fully funded by the Department of Homeland Security. The Infosat Auto-Deploy satellite system provides the backbone link for real time voice, fax and data. These squads are capable of routing sensor data and incident information paramount to logistical operations to both dispatch and other squad vehicles. With a single push of a button, the satellite dish automatically deploys and locates a satellite and interfaces with the modem to establish a connection to communicate. In any emergency where response time is paramount, having a robust and reliable network is indispensable. This integrated solution has set a standard for first responder organizations across the state of California and is likely to be adopted by other states across the country.
