MSAT - General FAQs

  • How is an MSAT system different from a cellular or PCS phone?
    • The main difference between an MSAT phone and a cellular telephone is the location of the network antennas. Antennas for cellular telephone networks are numerous and are located near the ground where they are easily visible. The antennas for mobile satellite telephones are on satellites in geosynchronous orbit, remaining over the same place over the equator. Because these satellites are 23,000 miles above the earth, only one satellite, with 5 separate transmitters, is needed to cover the entire North American continent.

  • How are MSAT systems different from other satellite phones such as Iridium or Globalstar?
    • The Iridium and Globalstar phones are different from MSAT in three ways:
      • They utilize networks of satellites in low or medium earth orbits which give them global coverage, whereas the satellites supporting MSAT telephones are regional networks and only provide communications in North America.
      • The terminals are smaller than MSAT terminals, nearly as small as cellular telephone handsets.
      • The dispatch feature of the MSAT networks which allows MTs to be used as if they were HF radios is a unique feature of the MSAT networks and is not available with Iridium or Globalstar.

  • Where can I use an MSAT system?
    • Current MSAT services reach from North of Fairbanks, Alaska to as far South as Caracas, Venezuela. The coverage also extends over 100 kilometers off the coast of North America, as shown in the MSAT Coverage Map.

  • Can I use a fax machine with an MSAT terminal?
    • Yes. Fax machines can be used with MSAT device, depending on the service provider. To connect a fax machine to an MSAT phone, you must obtain an interface device and an account with the service provider.

  • Can I connect a secure, NSA approved telephone such as the STU-III to an MSAT terminal?
    • Yes. STU-III secure telephones have been approved for use with MSAT terminals. Additional interface hardware, available from MSAT service providers, is needed to connect the STU-III to an MT.

  • Can I send email or other data with an MSAT terminal?
    • Electronic mail and other data can easily be transmitted via the MSAT terminal. Each phone has a serial data port which can be set up to send data on the AMSC and TMI systems.
